Disability

A disability leave may impact your benefits. You may be eligible for:

  • Short-term disability (STD) - Duration of benefit ranges from three weeks to twenty-six weeks.
  • Long-term disability (LTD) income benefits - Benefits will not accrue beyond the longer of the Duration of Benefits or Normal Retirement Age, as defined by Social Security.

If coverage of a benefit ends due to qualified life event, you may be eligible for a temporary continuation of coverage through COBRA. Click here for more information on COBRA.

Click here to view the Summary Plan Descriptions for each of American Greeting’s Benefit Plans for more details on the impact of your benefits due to a qualified life event.

If you want to make changes to your benefits, log into myAGBenefits or call the AGBenefits Service Center at (877) 213-6240.

Health Care/Dental/Vision

The First 12 months of Disability
The health care, dental, and vision coverage you have when you become approved may be continued for you and your covered dependents at the associate’s contribution during the first 12 months you are disabled. When continued coverage can no longer be paid through payroll deduction you are billed for continued coverage.

After 12 months of Disability
Generally, after 12 months on disability leave, you are separated from the company and you may qualify for continued health care, dental and vision coverage while disabled after separation under COBRA.

Life & AD&D Insurance

If you are enrolled in a Company sponsored Long-term disability (LTD) Plan and are disabled before age 60, basic life coverage is continued at no cost to you while on LTD up to age 65.

Optional coverage up to the amount carried while you were actively employed and can be continued as long as you remain disabled and continue to make the required premium payments.

You may convert to an individual life insurance policy based on the premium rates for the new policy.

Health Savings Accounts

Your eligibility to make contributions to an HSA can change mid-year for many reasons. For help determining your prorated HSA contributions after a change, go here: HSA Contributions - mid-year changes. You can make changes to your pretax contributions at anytime during the year by logging into myAGBenefits. Go to: Change my Benefits>Events>Update HSA Contributions.

Flexible Spending Accounts

You may want to make a change to your Flexible Spending Account (FSA) election if on a disability. The American Greetings Healthcare Flexible Spending Account and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account enables you to use pre-tax dollars to pay for eligible medical, dental, vision (“limited purpose” if enrolled in an H.S.A.) and dependent care expenses. You have up to 30 days after the qualifying event to make the change.

Your Flexible Spending Account (FSA) may be continued through the end of the plan year, contingent upon payment of any required contributions when you are on an authorized leave of absence from your company.

  • If you are on leave receiving pay (i.e. short-term disability) your contributions will continue as usual through the normal payroll cycle, provided pay is enough to cover the deductions.
  • If you are on leave not receiving pay you will be billed for your contributions.

When you return to work, contributions (if any) to a Health Care Spending Account will be reinstated, provided you return within the same calendar year. If you stopped contributions to a Health Care Spending Account, you will have the option to either, prorate your election for the remainder of the calendar year or elect the full amount of participation in effect before the leave and make up the missed contributions.

Retirement Savings Plan

You may continue contributing to the plan while on short-term disability leave as compensation includes income from American Greetings and excludes, for example, amounts paid by state or government instrumentalities and insurance companies for such reasons as long-term disability.

If you become totally disabled while employed, you may elect to receive a distribution of your account balance. Distribution will be made as soon as administratively feasible following your request for payment.
